Worcester City Amateur boxing club Schoolboy Michael Cullen was beaten on points by James Edwards of Triumph ABC in the Midland Schools Final at Donnington.
Competing in the Class 3, 46 - 48kg group, Cullen started well and outpointed Edwards with fast jabs and solid right hands. The quick moving Worcester boy returned to the stool at the end of the first ahead on points. The more experienced Edwards is known as a slow starter and he began turn the tide halfway through the second with aggressive two fisted assaults. Edwards continued the pressure in the final round with Cullen beginning to tire. Minor success with the jab in the last round from Cullen could not halt the relented onslaught from Edwards. The Coventry boxer was declared the winner and Midlands Champion on a unanimous decision. This was Cullen's first attempt at championship boxing and he applied himself with great determination. In preparation, Cullen managed to lose approximately 2kgs with less then a day to go to make the weight. With no excess weight to start, Cullen could teach any weight watcher a trick or two.  Such was his desire to fight, he was not going to let anything get in his way.

Lightweight Jon Roberts was also in action against Sean Greenfield of Clareys ABC at Leamington Assembly rooms.
Boxing three, three minute rounds, Roberts started the better of the two. Solid right hands caught the oncoming southpaw flush on the chin. Having the better of the exchanges, Roberts looked good in the opening round with a steady workrate.
Greenfield got into his stride during the second and with local support took Roberts out of his rhythm with right hooks and straight lefts. As the bout wore on, Greenfield got stronger as Roberts began to fade at little. Right hands still found their target but Roberts could not deny Greenfield victory by way of a unanimous decision.
